Take up an outdoor sport.
One of my favorite things to do during the summer is going to the tennis courts. When it's super hot outside, I try to wake up early or go later in the day as the sun is setting. If tennis isn't your game, some other options include stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, hiking, and even sailing. Whatever you choose, it always feels great to work up a sweat before sitting in the pool or indoors all day.
Host a healthy barbecue.
Instead of the typical burgers and potato chips, try throwing a healthy cookout for your friends and family this summer. Set out a few pitchers of infused water and homemade lemonade. Fill a few apothecary jars with fresh fruit, orzo salad, and greens. For entrees, make something light such as grilled chicken with lemon and rosemary. Some plant-based options to try are your favorite veggie burger and grilled avocado and romaine. On the side, serve homemade chips, pasta salad, and a fresh corn salad. For dessert, try a vegan peach tart and green juice popsicles.
Spend a weekend at the lake or beach.
Pack a weekend bag and head to your favorite spot for a few days of swimming, napping, campfires, and water sports. Be sure to pack a great bag full of all the essentials.
Have a movie marathon.
Prepare your snacks and your favorite pajamas. The summer movie marathon can take many forms, but here are a few ideas:
- Classic Summer Movies: The Parent Trap, Dazed and Confused, The Sandlot, Moonrise Kingdom
- Series: Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings
- Specific Actor: Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde, Sweet Home Alabama) or Ryan Gosling (The Notebook, Crazy Stupid Love)
- Quirky Indies: Wristcutters: A Love Story, Little Miss Sunshine, Jeff Who Lives at Home, Son of Rambow, Rushmore, Garden State, Almost Famous
Try out a summer beauty tutorial.
Summer is the perfect time to experiment with new beauty looks, especially ones that may be more out-of-the-box than your usual routine. If you're going to a festival or concert, experiment with face gems and perfect your scorching hot makeup look.
Take your workout outdoors.
Try out a new workout series like the ones from Tone It Up or Kayla Itsines. Even better, try taking your routine outdoors whether it be in your backyard or on the beach.
Read for fun.
Set aside the long, serious reads until fall and dig into some light, summer books and stacks of magazines. You can find my ongoing list of recommendations here on Goodreads.
Go see a "summer movie".
Summer is a great excuse to see an otherwise questionable movie in the theater. Being outside of award season means blockbusters and absurd comedies, which are just what the brain needs when the weather is hot. This summer, I'm looking forward to Money Monster, The Shallows, and X-Men: Apocalypse.
Create your own fro-yo station.
Make your own vegan fro-yo with fresh fruit in a blender. Then, set up a little assembly line of toppings such as sliced strawberries, blueberries, gummy bears, and boba pearls.
Memorialize your vacation.
Choose a method (blog/vlog/photograph) and capture all of the fun moments of your summer trip. Of course you'll capture the beautiful scenery and picture perfect meals, but also be sure to capture candid moments.
