For the longest time, I never bothered with using a face primer before applying my makeup. For the most part, my makeup looks have always been quite natural so I (wrongly) assumed that primer wouldn't really add value. When I eventually tried it, I realized how I had been missing out. A good primer doesn't feel greasy on your skin but instead makes the skin soft, silky, and hydrated. This allows for your makeup to be applied smoothly and to last much longer.
See below for my three favorite face primers:
First Aid Beauty Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer
I received a sample of this in my Sephora PLAY! box and it has since become one of my very favorite products. First of all, it smells like coconut which is a major plus. This product is oil-free and formulated with coconut water for hydration, a mineral blend for healthy skin, quinoa to protect and repair, and micro-pearls that create a luminous effect. The texture is thin and creamy, so it feels like your regular moisturizer and leaves a dewy finish.
Glossier Priming Moisturizer
I believe this may have been the first primer I fell in love with. Like most Glossier products, this primer really functions as a skincare product and aims to not only prep the skin for makeup but to improve the look of bare skin. The formula includes hyaluronic acid to retain moisture, a mushroom extract for plumping, a blend of tea and honey extracts to alleviate redness, an oxygenating agent to improve skin texture, and vitamins A, C, and E to protect against skin damage. This product feels just like a regular moisturizer, but is a bit thicker than the First Aid Beauty. It also leaves a dewy finish.
Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer
If you're a girl who wants a more polished, smooth makeup look (as opposed to the dewy, natural vibe), this is your go-to. This iconic product is free from parabens, SLS, sulfates, phthalates, oil, fragrance and talc but it is more of a traditional makeup product as opposed to being a skincare hybrid. It has a gel texture that feels super silky when you apply it to your skin and leaves a matte finish. I will say that, of all the primers, this one allows makeup to go on the smoothest and is the best option if you're doing your makeup for an event, a photoshoot, or if you're going to be on video. Plus, you can use it to tame flyaways in your hair so it's double duty.
